This class will introduce you to the basics of drawing using colored media. Learn to use various medias such as Conte, Pastels & watercolor pencil.

The instructor will
provide lots of individual instruction for all levels. Using a variety of themes, each section will begin with tools and materials. We will cover light and shadow, strokes, textures, composition, mixing color and a fun technique for each media.

PRINTMAKING

Students will learn the medium of linoleum block printing and a monotype technique.

Linocut is a graphic relief printmaking technique in which a block of linoleum is carved by hand in order to produce a matrix that can be used for multiple prints. Students will learn how to prepare and transfer an image onto a block of linoleum, how to carve the block using basic "Speedball" carving tools and how to print their matrix. The final edition of original prints will be produced. Students will learn how to properly ink the block and print by hand using a brayer and a barren, how to sign and number prints, as well as some easy cleanup techniques.

A monotype, often called a painters print, is created when an image is painted onto smooth surface, such as a plexiglass, then transferred onto printmaking paper. The image may consist of a single transfer or a buildup of multiple layers.

Students will also work collaboratively to create an "Exquisite Corpse" print, as well as individually on images that reflect personal themes and aesthetics.

This hands-on workshop is a formal introduction to OPEN, the new slow-dry paint system from Golden Artist Colors! Discover the exciting realm of Golden's Iridescent and Interference Colors in this hands-on workshop! This class will focus on how to incorporate the bold metallic look of the iridescent colors and the subtle shimmer of the Interference colors in your painting projects. See how you can manipulate the colors by themselves and how to change their behavior by mixing them with other pigments and acrylic gels. Morning Sessions will focus on Painting What You See
Students will all create a painting from the same image, then create a painting from an image of their choice. They can continue to work from an image or work from a still-life/model.

Continuing our pursuits of contemporary painting we’ll explore image transfers using wet mediums and creating new surface for painting and collage. Learn the art, science and mechanics of making dynamic "Gel Skins" for use in collage and to enhance mixed media painting skills. We will also explore a variety of methods in which to transfer an image directly into a variety of substrates. This class is heavy on process and materials to help the students become familiar and comfortable with the actual creation of Gel Skins and Image Transfer techniques. ORNATE PINE NEEDLE BASKETRY

Come learn how to transform plants into beautiful works of art. Not only is basketry a calming and meditative art form, but it’s also a wonderful way to recycle from the environment. Students will start by coiling around a lovely polished stone, then weave so their stitch work is identical on both sides of the basket. It’s an easy way to start a basket and you’ll find yourself looking for exciting things to use for centers such as brooches, pendants, etc. Pine needles and Irish waxed linen thread provided, but the coiling techniques can later be used to weave many common plants including lavender, jacaranda, dusty miller, rosemary.

PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP

Learn linocut print techniques while creating your own unique cards! Linocut is perfect for card-making and can be used for multiple occasions. We will use 4X6 linoleums, cut out an image, and print onto heavy paper.

More linoleums can be used to add successive images and colors. Words can be cut out and printed onto the card. All plates will be hand-printed. Techniques and products shown will make this a project you can do at your kitchen table! Participants will leave with the skills to make cards for any occasion.

SHOE REDUX-DECOUPAGE WORKSHOP

Create your own wearable “shoe art”, using the decoupage technique. In this workshop you will learn to take an ordinary pair of shoes and make them 100% unique. We will be using old magazines and print material to cover the students’ shoes. We will then coat them with an artist sealer that makes them water resistant, making these shoes perfect for a special occasion, milestone, or keepsake.

All materials included except the shoes- bring a pair with a smooth surface and sturdy sole. If you would like to include any photos*, or special print materials please bring them with you.

"A CLOSE UP VIEW" PAINTING WITH OIL OR SOFT PASTELS

 

 

Georgia O’Keeffe gave us a close-up view of flowers in her artwork, but for many of us, composition and how to use artists materials can be a tricky business. We will take close-up looks at still life, areas outdoors and sections of photographs to make compositions. Then, learn techniques of pastel painting with either oil pastels or soft pastels. How do thumbnail sketches help in composition? What about lines, colors and pattern? These questions will be answered as you work on small pastel paintings, then fine tune what you have learned while working on a large masterpiece the second day.

Quilling involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs such as flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns. Students will learn 24 different shapes and complete a project during this workshop. All materials included.

Story to Drama for Art
Ages 6-8

This is a wonderful class for young children. We’ll read stories and allow them to morph and change with costume parts, props and spontaneous “theatre of the imagination”. We’ll also do some visual art and let it generate story or poetry...fantastic for expression and self discovery! Writing skills aren’t necessary.

Secret Summer Journal
Ages 9-12

Your name and a warning on the front...a hidden compartment...no one will ever discover your secrets! This will be your very own collection of writings, paintings, and sketches for the summer time. Watercolor, pencil, magazine & tissue paper collage plus poetry, will be included. Projects will be taught but with plenty of room for personal creativity!

The Art of Imagination

The Art of Imagination week is intended to teach students about a variety of art media and the importance of working out your creative muscles! Students will have the ability to learn what type of work and media they are most comfortable with and might want to pursue. They will work on five projects that stretch their imagination and creativity, making physical art pieces to inspire further productivity worthy of any art gallery. Students will attain skills, learn new things, and make amazing pieces of artwork that they will keep and revisit for life.

Five projects include: Mask Makers, Dream Home, "My Favorite Things" Zine, Collaboration Station and Creative Creature Feature!

The Golden Fish Project

The Golden Fish Project - Experience the magic of peace, art and story! This camp is all about experimenting with different types of art, tools, and techniques. We will design, draw, paint, sculpt, write, collaborate and most importantly... have fun! There are 3 simple steps to follow: 1) Form an idea within the imagination 2) Create a concept and plan the design 3) Experience the magic in 3D.

Here is a preview of what we will create: The Golden Fish - watercolor and crayon A Cosmic Turtle - Dot Painting inspired by the Papunya People of Central Australia. Heart Butterfly - Mixed Media Sculpture Under the Sea - Pop-up art and clay figurines Flower Community Sculpture - Inspired by world renowned glass artist, Dale Chihuly

About the Instructor: Annie Macpherson is the author of The Golden Fish, a true story about the magic of dreams becoming reality. She is an artist, peace activist, and storyteller. She writes and designs art curriculum and teaches at various schools throughout San Diego County. She has also served as Board Member of Kids for Peace..

Watercolor Creations

Students will learn watercolor techniques including: sketching, drawing, composition skills, brush strokes and color blending. A variety of themes will be explored.

Printmaking Bootcamp

In this class, students will learn all about Monotype printmaking by hand. Using photo reference and the work of Degas, we will explore the additive and subtractive methods of creating a Monotype and combine it with collagraph techniques to build up our plates to pull prints from. Students will be learning a variety of coloring methods with water soluble paints and pastels both directly on the plates and on top of the prints to add extra sparkle to their work.

Comic Creations

Explore the process of creating characters and complete a finished comic page, from rough to inks. Learn character design, story boarding, page layout, expression and composition while putting together your very own comic. All materials included in class fee.

Expressive 3 Dimential Cartooning!

Learn to create expressive cartoon characters in a variety of action packed poses. We will begin with drawing our characters in different scenes and then turn these into wonderful miniature stage sets. Students will learn a variety of media and will learn fun drawing, collage and sculpture techniques.

Stop Motion Animation

ALearn the art of creating short narratives using the art of stop motion animation. Filming techniques include scanimation, claymation and time lapse motion. Students will work in small groups to create a short film from storyboard to final cut.

Poetry: Spoken Word Poetry
and Visual Art

Writing poetry is as easy and natural as making a grocery list. During this week we'll try out Haiku, list poems, random word bowl poems, and poems inspired by magazine photos. I'll introduce the cool oral tradition of speaking poetry which includes the Beat Poets, gospels songs and jazz. Daily we'll also do watercolor or pastel to accompany your writing.
